Shampa Gorai

(Born With Talents) – Dance

Shampa Gorai, a girl having 80% hearing impairment with associated speech problem has proved that nothing is impossible if a person has the zeal of achieving it.

She belongs to a nuclear family. She was brought to our Special School by her mother in the year 2000 believing that she will achieve success in her life. Assessment was done and then consulting with her parents, she was given training in various domains like Functional Reading & Writing, Language Development and in plus curricular. After a long period of 16 years and continuous interventions, she has recovered amazingly. She has taken training on tailoring for 1 year under VRCH and on diversified jute products for 3 months under NIOH. During the training period, she has learnt to make baby frocks, designer blouse, woolen items- sweater, cap, socks, muffler, etc.

Due to the sudden death of her father few months ago, she had to take some responsibilities of the family. She is now a treasurer of the Self Help Group named “Helen Keller Mahila Swanirvar Dal” and maintains her duty sincerely having the savings of ₹ 30,000/-. At present she can make 5 petticoats per day having the proper knowledge of measurements and learning churidar cutting of various designs.

Most significantly despite being hearing impaired, she has never stopped rather and has successfully learnt a dance form ‘Rabindra Nritya’ and completed fourth year with distinction marks. We are amazed and delighted to see her dedication in the plus curricular and we support her wish to become a dance choreographer for the children suffering from hearing impairment.
